Just imagine taking a day to explore secret coves as you drop your lines into the various waterways, sip from the beverages you packed in a cooler, and feel all the stresses and tensions of day-to-day life drop from your shoulders. Life just does not get any better than this, and because you are a member (or are in the process of considering being a member) of the Carefree Boat Club, you get the opportunity to get out there on the water while most everyone else is stuck fishing from the piers or the shore!
Fishing License
Before you head off for your day of fishing, you must take the time to purchase a fishing license for everyone who is going to be fishing. Pier fishermen and women don’t have to purchase licenses, but you with the big boat are going out to sea and will have to pay your dues, so to speak! The best part of buying online is being able to purchase it at any time of the day or night, so if you are up at 2 AM and remember you haven’t purchased yours yet, you are just a few clicks on your keyboard away!
San Diego Bay
Wearing your favorite deck shoes and perhaps a jaunty captain’s hat, you step onto the bow of your Carefree Boat Club fishing boat, ready to head out to San Diego Bay for a day of fishing and contemplation of all life’s mysteries, and if you are whistling a happy tune while you do so, who can blame you? Today is another beautiful day in paradise, the sun is shining, and the only worries you have revolve around how many (or how few) fish you will be able to catch. Being a club member means that beyond choosing your date, your boat, and paying your dues, you don’t have anything else to deal with and your long lazy summer day is about to begin. San Diego Bay is home to a huge variety of fish, including spotted bay bass, halibut, and croakers.
Offshore Fishing in San Diego for the Win
If you are going all in on your summer fishing expedition, you might as well go offshore and go for the big gamefish! Speak to your Carefree Boat Club representative to determine which boat would be best put to use offshore fishing or research the options in your guide! Yellowfin and bluefin tuna are popular catches in the summer, and once you taste your catch of the day, you will absolutely understand their popularity! The best bite zone for yellowfin tuna has been calculated to be found about 40 miles or so off Point Loma, the 9-Mile Bank, and the 209 Spot. Bluefin tuna is a little more difficult to catch, requiring more fuel as you go further offshore, but they have also been spotted (and caught) near the 9-Mile Bank as well. Any of these spots can bring you luck, so if you think you have it in you, schedule a second day on the sea in another Carefree Boat Club boat and reap the benefits! Remember, you can have up to four boating excursions on the books at any given time and we also offer “Spur of the Moment” boats that do not count against your four bookings. These can be rented by speaking by contacting the dockmasters at the marina of your choice.
What Fish Can You Find?
Summertime in San Diego is when the best fishing can take place, and in addition to the fish we mentioned earlier, there are quite a few species that can be caught between May and September! Albacore, big eye, bonito, and calico bass are often found during these months as well as dorado, rockfish, rock cod, and marlin. Rockfish is a popular fish in the area, even as it can be particularly smelly, it can also be extremely sweet to eat. Yellowtail tuna is an amazing sushi dish and can be caught in the summer as well, so if you have some free time on your hands in between boating trips and fishing trips, why not sign up for a sushi making class, using the yellowtail you caught as the main course!
