Our last Carefree Boat Club training blog covered Operating a Personal Watercraft (PWC). As a follow up. this week’s #TrainingThursday will cover Ignition Safety Switches. We will cover how a safety ignition switch works.
Most powerboats and PWCs have a safety switch. This switch shuts off the engine if the operator falls off the PWC or out of the powerboat.
A lanyard connects the safety switch to the operator’s wrist or life jacket. In the event an operator falls out of the vessel, the lanyard is pulled from the switch and the engine cuts off.
Wearing a lanyard on a PWC reduces the risk of propeller strike and other injuries. In the event, an operator is not wearing a lanyard and falls from the vessel, the PWC will most likely run in hard, fast circles creating imminent danger or death from propeller strike.
