The Ultimate San Diego Boating Experience

San Diego, California is known and loved by many for its year-round incredible weather, sunny disposition and endlessly appealing waves that have long made it a boat enthusiast’s dream come true. Whether you’re in town to make the most of angling fun from the comfort of the Robalo R 242 or can’t wait to enjoy time on another variety of vessel, exploring the waters in style is easier than ever to accomplish in this destination. Since the first European explorers set foot on San Diego’s shores, it’s been a place recognized for its natural definition that lends itself to seamless boating all year-long. For those that do find themselves here to enjoy fishing, there are plenty of options to enjoy not only in terms of locales, but also in the variety of species that call the waters home.

What to Reel in While You’re Here

The Robalo R 242 is a top choice for anglers with good reason, and so are the species that are available to be reeled in while you’re enjoying this sunny destination. The waters around San Diego are home to Rockfish and White Seabass in abundance but many anglers head this way in direct pursuit of the Yellowtail Amberjack. This species is known for its spirited approach to life, making it a challenging, yet satisfying choice. Those who find themselves in San Diego with a sure purpose of pursuing Yellowtail Amberjack will find they can reel in two types including the Firecrackers and Mossback. The Firecrackers are the smaller variety of the two and weigh anywhere from 12 to 25 pounds. Mossback Yellowtails are significantly larger and can reach up to 40 pounds.

Where to Fish

Anglers in San Diego enjoy many options when it comes to where and how to fish. In-shore, deep-sea, and sport-fishing are all possible when you’re spending time on the water in Southern California. Those that are looking to go offshore, the Coronado islands are about a 30-minute ride from Point Loma. Past the islands, are the offshore tuna grounds such as the 302, 425, and Hidden Bank. Bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, dorado, bonito, and yellowtail are all readily available between April and October. For those that want to stay closer to shore, the Point Loma kelp or San Diego Bay are great for casting plastic lures or live bait. Lobster season is also another fun activity Carefree Boat Club members get to enjoy.
