We in San Diego are fortunate to live in a climate of endless summer. The days rarely grow too hot, too cold, or too rainy, and the sun makes its presence known nearly every day of the year, so when the end of summer does come, we rarely make note, except for in one instance. Labor Day, the last holiday of the season (occurring on September 4 this year) gives us an extra paid day off, one that can be most enjoyed on a boat in the waters that surround our coastal city. Not everyone has their own boat, however, as costs for maintenance, repairs, docking, and so many other items associated with boat ownership can make it prohibitively expensive, but those who know, know. In our opinion, there are two types of people in this world; people who don’t fish and people who can never get enough time at the opposite end of the pole! For our fishing enthusiasts, Labor Day is a gift that can be used best on one of our fishing boats, again with coolers of food and drink, spending all the daylight hours with your pole in the water. Inshore fishing is very popular and if you decide you want to stay in the shallower waters closer to land, that is perfectly ok, but something tells us that the fishing obsessed, once they get behind the helm, may point the boat in the direction of far offshore! Ready for a day of deep sea excitement and unwilling to return to dock until the catch is filled, Labor Day will still offer a little bit of work when it is time to clean your catch before the sun sets!
See the Sights This San Diego Labor Day
It’s funny. We live in one of the most popular tourist states in the nation, but we don’t often get out ourselves to see the sights. We work too hard and play too little and very few of us have actually taken the time to explore the tourist attractions and on this rare Monday off in September, you may find yourself wanting to take some time to see the sights. Head over to the Point Loma Reserve and check out the statue of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the explorer noted for discovering our fair city and while you’re there, check out the Old Point Loma Lighthouse constructed in 1854 and open for tours to the public now that it is no longer being used as a lighthouse. Take the sea route to Balboa Park, home to 18 museums, and spend your day off immersed in nature, history, and Comic Con as the Comic Con Museum is one of the 18! Cruise on over to Coronado Island for a day on one of the most beautiful beaches in the state, perhaps even peeking in on the historic Hotel Del Coronado. The hours between sunrise and sunset spread out before you waiting to be filled with fun, excitement, and adventure, all of which are enhanced because you chose to become a member of the Carefree Boat Club!
