One of the most plentiful fish in the area is the halibut, and these fish can be found just about anywhere. You’ll find halibut gathered in San Diego Bay, Mission Bay, La Jolla, and more! San Diego Bay and Mission Bay are also great locations for finding the appropriately named spotted bay bass. San Diego Bay also sports bonefish, while Mission Bay boasts corvina. Looking for rockfish? As the name suggests, just head out to any rocky areas with deep waters and you’ll find these. Yellowtail can be found throughout the San Diego area, but the further south you go, the bigger and more common these fish get. The La Jolla area is also great for yellowtail. La Jolla also boasts calico bass, lingcod, and barracuda. Lastly, head to the 302 and 425, offshore banks, for tuna fishing; you’ll find a large number of yellowfin and bluefin tuna here! However, the best time for fishing in San Diego is May-October, with the months of June, July, and August being the height of the fishing season here. Summertime in San Diego is a fisherman’s paradise. Enjoy ocean fishing here in the summer but avoid the heat of other fishing areas as the average temperature is still only 76 degrees this time of year! During these warm but comfortable summer months, there are nearly 20 different types of local fish that are all in season. In addition to all of the fish we’ve already mentioned, you’ll also find sand bass, shark, wahoo, blue fin, bonito, and more!
