Local Boating Guide

Exploring the waters of the area offers endless opportunities for adventure, sightseeing, and dining. Check out our local guide for inspiration on where to go, what to see, and the best spots to eat and drink on your next boating trip.

Places to See

Some of the best sights around Charlotte can only be seen from the water, and one Carefree membership puts all three of our lakes within reach. On Lake Norman, cruise south from Kings Point Marina to take in the scale of Cowans Ford Dam, slow down for the great blue herons on Davidson Creek, or make a full day of it with a run up the lake to the quiet coves of Lake Norman State Park. On Lake Wylie, Tega Cay Marina and Harbortowne Marina put you minutes from lakefront parks like Windjammer, Ebenezer and South Point, the long wooded shoreline of McDowell Nature Preserve, and the Buster Boyd Bridge at the heart of the lake. Up on Lake Hickory, the pace slows down even more, with calm, tree-lined water and lakeside parks around Hickory, including Geitner Park and the Riverwalk Bridge. The Float LKN and Float Wylie apps are handy for finding your way around, and our dock crew is always happy to point you to their favorite spots. Pack the cooler, bring the dog and go see what's around the next cove!

Riverwalk Bridge

Riverwalk Bridge

The Riverwalk segment of the Hickory Trail showcases one of Hickory’s most beautiful, natural assets—the Catawba River. The Riverwalk runs approximately 2.3 miles through Geitner Park along the river. It provides public access to Lake Hickory with an overwater bridge and a combination of waterfront and wooded trails, offering visitors a variety of scenery and multiple vantage points to admire the beauty of the lake and the surrounding natural environments.

Camp Thunderbird

Camp Thunderbird

Our beautiful 100-acre facility boasts a high ropes course, zip line, alpine tower, two swimming pools and over 20 Sunfish sailboats.

Windjammer Park

Windjammer Park is Tega Cay's lakefront park, set on a point with a swim beach, a playground, a covered picnic shelter and restrooms. A small boater area on one side of the point lets you visit from the water. Driving in requires a city parking permit, so arriving by boat is the easy way in. On summer Friday nights, the Carolina Show Ski Team performs here.

Cowans Ford Dam

Cowans Ford Dam

Head south from Kings Point and Lake Norman ends at Cowans Ford Dam, the Duke Energy dam that has held back the lake since 1963. McGuire Nuclear Station sits on the shore beside it. This is a view-only stop, so stay outside the posted buoy lines and take in the scale from the water. It's about 20 minutes from Kings Point and an easy add-on to a casual cruise around the southern end of the lake.

Heron Island

Heron Island

In the main channel of Davidson Creek, Heron Island is a nesting site for great blue herons. Duke Energy posts the nesting area closed from April through August, so enjoy it from the water and keep your distance. Bring binoculars in early spring, when the birds are busiest. It's roughly 20 minutes from Kings Point.

Things to Do

There's no wrong way to spend a day on the lake, and there's plenty to fill one. On Lake Norman, drop anchor at a sandbar for an afternoon swim, find a quiet cove for a lazy float, or cast a line for striped bass a short ride from Kings Point Marina. Lake Wylie brings family-friendly sandbars, peaceful coves along Catawba Creek near Harbortowne Marina, big blue catfish, and summer evenings watching the Carolina Show Ski Team perform at Windjammer Park in Tega Cay. On Lake Hickory, the calm water is made for easy cruising, tubing and fishing close to Hickory Pub and Marina. Wherever you boat, members get free lessons and complimentary watersports gear, from wakeboards and surfboards to tubes and water skis, and sailors can learn from a licensed captain and expert sailing instructor at Kings Point. New to all of it? Our team will have you feeling right at home on the water, and nobody is counting your lessons!

Fishing on Lake Wylie

Fishing on Lake Wylie

Harbortowne MarinaTega Cay Marina

Lake Wylie is known for blue catfish in the 15 to 25 pound range, along with largemouth bass and crappie. The lake straddles the state line, and the two states do not honor each other's licenses here, so carry a license for whichever state's water you fish, or both. South Carolina water also has a 14-inch minimum on largemouth bass, but don’t worry – there are plenty that easily meet the minimum.

Carolina Show Ski Team

Tega Cay Marina

The Carolina Show Ski Team puts on water ski shows at Windjammer Park in Tega Cay on summer Friday nights. The 2026 season ran eight shows from May 29 to July 31, each starting at 7 p.m. and lasting about an hour, with food and dessert trucks on site.

Fishing on Lake Norman

Fishing on Lake Norman

Kings Point Marina

Lake Norman holds largemouth, spotted and striped bass, plus white perch, crappie and catfish; the lake has produced an 85-pound blue catfish. Anyone fishing needs a North Carolina fishing license. Ask the dock crew which boat and which coves fit the day's plan.

Places to Eat

Half the fun of a day on the water is pulling up to the dock for lunch. On Lake Norman, members tie up at lakeside favorites like LakeHouse Wine Bar & Grill, just around the corner from Kings Point Marina, the fish-camp seafood at Hello, Sailor and the lakefront patio at North Harbor Club in Davidson, while Toucan's, Blue Parrot Grill and Anntony's at the Landing make a great reason for a longer cruise up the lake. On Lake Wylie, Papa Doc's Shore Club beside the Buster Boyd Bridge is the classic dock-and-dine, Drift's lake-view patios are a short ride from Harbortowne Marina, and J.R. Cash's waits at the north end for a long day up the Catawba. On Lake Hickory, you don't have to go far at all: Lake Hickory Pub and Marina sits right at our dock, so lunch, ice cream or a sunset dinner is only steps from the boat. Docks can fill up on busy weekends, so plan ahead, and ask our dock crew where they'd go for lunch today!

Lake House Wine Bar & Grill
