Lake Hickory is a 4,223-acre stretch of the Catawba River in western North Carolina, with 105 miles of shoreline and roughly a fifth of it kept as nature reserve, which is why the banks stay green and the mornings stay still. Leaving the marina is a pleasant cruise down the tree-lined shore. Gunpowder Creek comes down through Granite Falls and joins the lake a couple of miles from the slip. Lake Hickory boating belongs to the entire western North Carolina region, touching parts of four North Carolina counties, Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba. Down-lake, the water opens up and turns to a beautiful calm blue color, perfect for floating and soaking up the sun. Up-lake is ideal for cruising and appreciating the waterway as it used to be. The trip from downtown hickory is a short three mile drive. It's close enough for a quick weeknight boat ride without extensive planning. Granite Falls sits just five miles up US-321, and the dock is easily reached from Conover via I-40. Ideal for boaters in Catawba county and the four counties this lake touches. Members come from Viewmont and Mountain View, from St. Stephens out along Springs Road, and from the Oakwood streets near downtown. Plenty of members join Carefree Boat Club with limited boating experience. One of the best parts of our job is spreading our love of boating and helping new members confidently and safely enjoy the water! Learning to boat on Lake Hickory starts with a NASBLA-certified safety course the membership covers, then continues on the water, one-on-one with our dedicated crew. From docking to wake surfing, members receive complimentary lessons on all things boating. The relatively calm and quiet waters of Lake Hickory is a great place for boating whatever your experience level. We also have the gear your family needs to enjoy the day on the water, including wakeboards, tubes, water skis, surfboards, and kneeboards. The best part? It's all included and we never charge extra fees for gear or specialty boats.
Your Dock Crew at Carefree Lake Hickory
By the time you have parked, the boat is fueled up and ready to go. Our dedicated team is on this water every day of the season. The club is locally owned and operated, and many of our crew members are long-time club members that have grown up boating Lake Hickory. They know where the shallows are at this end of the lake and when the wind picks up in the afternoon, and they are glad to tell you. And when you come back in, somebody is there to take your line, guide you into the slip, and help you unload the boat. Hand over the keys, and we take care of the rest.
