- Legoland Toddler Tuesday

- What: A dozen of Chicago’s excellent museums have banded together for Chicago Museum Week.

- Fall Fest at Lincoln Zoo
- Where: Lincoln Park Zoo, 2001 N. Clark St. (312-742-2000)
- What: Lincoln Park Zoo is hosting a new harvest season celebration the first three weekends of October. A giant 60-foot burlap sack slide will rise at the zoo’s main mall and hay-wagon rides will travel throughout the Farm-in-the-Zoo. Look for a pumpkin carver, Ferris wheel, inflatables, educational activities and live entertainment.

- Apple Fest In Lincoln Square
- Where: 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue
- What: Hot apple cider, fresh-baked apple pies, apple pizzas and bushels of apples provide a cozy autumn fragrance, while the strains of live music from nearby Giddings Plaza bounce between storefronts, providing the soundtrack. This year’s Kid Zone features kids activities throughout the day.

- St. Charles Scarecrow Fest
- Where: Lincoln Park (the intersection of Main and 4th streets), St. Charles
- What: The fair offers typical entertainment (like a couple dozen bands playing multiple stages over three days), but everyone comes for the scarecrows. Last year’s display included more than 100 handmade straw men, and people vote for their favorites in different categories (traditional, family, whimsical, mechanical).

- Stories and S’Mores
- Where: Oct. 9: Dan Ryan Woods Pavilion, 8691 S. Western Ave. Oct. 22: Rolling Knolls, 11N260 Rohrssen Rd, Elgin. Oct. 30: Eggers Grove, 11200 S. Avenue B.
- What: Bring your sweet tooth and your love of crisp autumn weather to the Cook County Forest Preserves for this series of free evening events. As darkness falls ever earlier, enjoy fireside stories, snacks, star-gazing and other nature activities.

- National Geographic Live
- What: The four-event series (two in autumn, two in spring) covers a wide range of topics, from oceans to volcanoes to dinosaurs. In October, a paleontologist recounts the discovery of Spinosaurus (pictured), a predator larger than the T. rex; December’s presentation, “Ocean Wild,” includes a new look at dolphin intelligence.
