When you live in paradise, it can be difficult to determine when the best season for boating is, but after more than a few minutes in the business, we at Carefree Boat Club think we have cracked the code. Every season has something special going for it, including watching the world come alive in spring, the carefree and joyous vibe of summer, and the winter holidays make a day on the water seem more exciting. But in the fall in San Diego? Everything seems to come together to create voyages that are as close to perfect as can be! The weather is less tumultuous, the temperatures are ideal, and as the tourists have begun to return home to their real lives, the waters are definitely less crowded. And because there are so many more reasons you will want to boat in the fall, especially as a member of the Carefree Boat Club, we have created this guide to getting out on the waters of San Diego during the most perfect season of all.
The Sea Is Yours!
Some of our readers may remember the “Bob’s Highway” commercials that purportedly showed a man driving happily on roads that were empty and free of dangers as he was driving on his own personal highway, and often, fall boating can seem like that as well! If you have lived in San Diego for more than a minute or two, you already know that fall is when the lines in restaurants shorten, the beaches clear, and yes, the waters suddenly are more open and feature fewer novice boaters. You may not feel like renaming San Diego Bay to Bob’s Bay, and of course, you would never refer to the sea as Ophelia’s Ocean, but as you cruise the waters on a sunny day in your boat of choice, the lack of obstacles will add to the freedom you feel!
Festival Season
Fall is festival season in San Diego and many of the festivals are held at waterfront parks, ensuring you can skip the traffic on the roads and sail happily on the wide-open waters! The CRSSD Festival Fall 2023, held September 23 & 24 at Waterfront Park, offers two days of electronic music from your favorite bands that you won’t be able to refrain from dancing to. The San Diego Spirits Festival, held October 7 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, offers a beautiful and refined celebration of spirits and fine art. And the Del Mar Fairgrounds are the site of the 2023 Del Mar Harvest Festival from October 13 through 15. Some of the festivals may require you to park at a nearby arena and walk a bit, but the beautiful fall weather just enhances your time at whichever festival you are planning on attending!
Fall Is for Fishing
Fall is absolutely the best time to experience a fishing expedition, and you can stick close to shore, seeking bass, trout, or catfish, or head out to the deep waters for albacore, yellowtail, and rock fish! Early mornings will be cooler, but as the day progresses it will get warmer, so dress in layers and unpeel piece by piece as the sun makes it way higher in the sky. Fall is also the perfect time for a barbecue, and the fish you can catch on your fall fishing expedition will taste even better when grilled and enjoyed al fresco under the setting sun!
Sunsets in Fall Are Magical
We know we don’t have to tell you about how beautiful the sunset is in the fall, especially over the water, but you may not have thought of it as a reason as to why fall boating is absolutely perfect. And although it will be stunning and photo worthy no matter which boat you reserve from the club, we think a sunset sail in the fall may just about be the MOST perfect way to enjoy it! Dropping anchor with the first dip of the fiery globe in the sky, perhaps spreading out a small charcuterie board to sample and pouring a glass of wine in toast to its magnificence, your sunset sail aboard our Carefree Boat Club sailboat may absolutely create memories you will never want to forget.
