Every season is the best season to explore the waters that surround our San Diego hometown paradise, but there is one time of the year when the crowds thin out and the lines at boat launches start to shorten, and because this is your home too, you know that tends to happen right around the end of summer. Schools are open again, families are beginning to prepare for the holidays, and our Carefree Boat Club members are putting their names on the books for the vessel of their choice, knowing the waters will be glassy and clear, the sun will shine but not too brightly, and life will be as close to perfect as possible as they zip across the sea in boats that are well-maintained, sparkling clean, and filled with luxurious extras! Enjoy the beautiful waters and rent a boat in San Diego in the off season.
Rent a Boat in San Diego in the Off-Season
The high season for fishing corresponds to the quiet season in San Diego, so one of your boating adventures may be a fishing expedition to help fill your freezers at home. September and October are the best times of the year to catch your limit of delicious fish, include yellowtail amberjack, halibut, and calico bass, all sweet and delicious and destined to introduce your family to a lifetime of healthy eating. Also the time when the big game fish are migrating, taking your Carefree Boat Club boat out into the deep waters could earn you some of the biggest trophy fish, including tuna and marlin. Once the calendar page turns to November, the crowds start picking up again and the fishing isn’t as great, but that’s ok; your long suffering spouse doesn’t have to know that you picked up the fish you brought home at the local market and simply spent your day trolling the waters and savoring the serenity they bring you!
Fall Festivals for Boaters
There is no law that states revelers have to take a car to the events and festivals they are enjoying in the fall. As a matter of fact, many of the local events can be reached by boat, including the San Diego Festival of the Arts, taking place on September 10 at San Diego Surf Sports Park. Offering the opportunity to start your Christmas shopping early, boaters can dock their boats nearby and not worry about having to find parking in the crowded San Diego streets. Another fall festival we think you will enjoy, the 15th Annual Spirits Festival, is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla on October 19th and 20th. Offering a beautiful blend of colorful cocktails and stunning art, attending this festival is an idyllic way to spend a fall day. You may want to let your co-member of the Carefree Boat Club take the helm on the way back, especially as drinking and boating definitely don’t mix, but this will just make you thankful that both you and your spouse chose to purchase memberships!
Shorter Waiting Times at Your Favorite Dock and Dine Restaurants
There is something extra luxurious about taking the helm of a sleek water vessel and pointing it in the direction of your favorite restaurant, something our members do quite often. They have had to learn, however, to be patient during most of the year or to dine at off times, as wait lists seem to get longer every day. In the off season, just like in the off times, these same restaurants may feature much shorter wait times, allowing you to be seated and served in short order, which in turn gives you more time to enjoy the freedom of the seas. If you have been a member of the Carefree Boat Club for any length of time, you probably already have a few restaurants that are your favorites, but if not, we recommend Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, located at 2150 Harbor Island Drive and serving a delicious menu of seafood favorites from an actual working lighthouse.
Freedom to Explore
During the busiest seasons of the year, boaters may have to go far to experience solitude and serenity but during the off season, you can save gas money, and stay closer to shore. The hidden coves stay quiet, the waters remain still, and you rarely have to look out for other, less experienced boaters, who haven’t quite managed to navigate a boy and keep an eye out for other boats in their lanes. Find that special spot you love so much, shut down the engines, and bob gently in the water, letting the salt air and ocean breezes clear your mind of worries, fears, and any thoughts of life on land. These moments of peace and quiet will help fortify you against all that awaits when you navigate back to the docks, hand your boat over to the dock master, and step back into real life.
