We San Diegans know how lucky we are. With near perfect weather all year long, we barely notice the changing of the seasons as one day blends into the next in an array of moderate temperatures, blue skies, and cool nights that make us want to sit out on our back porches and watch the stars twinkle above. But just because the weather is always good and the seasons are all pretty much the same, that doesn’t mean that the thought of getting out on your boat, heading out to places unknown, and exhilarating in the longer days doesn’t make your heart beat a bit faster! Summer will always be that one season that makes us feel like children and as the sun rises earlier and sets later, the opportunity for adventures spread out before us in an endless array of fun. And because you are an adult now and your toys are all that much more expensive and cool, your summer days can be enjoyed on the sea in one of our many Carefree Boat Club exciting vessels. This guide to boating activities that will start your summer in San Diego off the right way, ensuring that your season will be the best yet.
Boat Camping
Camping is always fun, but there is usually so much work involved, between setting up your tent, spreading out your gear, and starting a fire. On a boat, however, the prep is done earlier as you fill a cooler with your favorite foods and beverages and climb aboard for a night of sleeping under the stars. Carefree Boat Club does allow for overnight boating although there may be some additional training required, but your summer adventures will be amazing when you start out the season boat camping. The sleep you will enjoy promises to be deeper than any other you have experienced as the boat gently rocks you to sleep; no campfires are allowed to be built on the boats, of course, but we don’t think you will miss them!
Deep Sea Fishing
More daylight hours mean more time to catch your limit when you head out to the open seas for a day of relaxing, enjoying the elements, and of course, catching the big fish! And although April and October are the peak sports fishing months, every day is the best day to go fishing in San Diego. Tuna season starts between March and April and ends between September and October, but if you are seeking Bigeye and Albacore, summer is always the perfect time of the year! Marlin seasons starts in June, yellowtail Amberjack is always on the agenda, and believe it or not, shark can be a pretty tasty catch, but the latter is not recommended unless you are a trained fisherman!
Sunset Sails This Summer in San Diego
Again, sunsets happen every day of the year, but there is just something significantly summerlike about boarding a sailboat and skimming across the waters on a beautiful and sunny day. Drop anchor as sunset draws near, pop open a bottle of your favorite bubbly, and prepare for a romantic moment you will never forget. As the sun is slowly descending in a giant ball of fiery color and the boat is rocking in the waters, this may be the perfect time to pop that big question you have been putting off and although we can’t guarantee anything, we know from experience it is difficult to say no under the setting sun of San Diego!
Mission Bay Adventures
Mission Bay offers many of its own adventures that promise to bring a spark of extra to your summer kickoff activities, starting with a dive in the kelp forest located just 6 miles off Point Loma’s coastline. This unique forest presents a variety of areas to explore, including overhangs, big boulders, and of course, the walls of kelp in which sea life teems and thrives. The most popular spots to dive in the kelp forest are Three Fingers, New Hope Rock, and Lazy Daze, but there are a variety of diving spots in the area which are destined to become your new obsession. Ski Beach, located just across Fisherman’s Channel, is a great place for waterskiing and tubing and because it offers fire pits, barbecues, and a playground, families love to spend an early summer day letting the kiddos burn off excess energy before heading back to the seas to continue their boating adventures!
Delicious Adventures
Food is not just fuel that keeps our bodies moving, it offers an adventures that helps keep our souls alive and when you dock and dine at Portside Pier, you will understand exactly what we are talking about! Offering fresh seafood, Mexican flavors, and a dock side seat to the beauty of the water your summer adventures are destined to be most delicious when you make this restaurant your newest haunt.
