Hurricane Matthew Safety Preparations for Hampton Roads

Carefree Boat Club Virginia Beach & Hampton would like our residents to be safe and prepared as Hurricane Matthew heads towards us this weekend. Below is a checklist to help prepare you, your family & your boat:

Hurricane checklist for you and your family:

  • monitor weather alerts
  • know your residence, neighborhoods, and streets reactions to strong storms and flooding
  • familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, plans; have all important documents together in a water proof container
  • keep your gas tank full (gas pumps can’t work without electricity)
  • Have a minimum of 3 gallons of drinking water on hand
  • stock up on non-perishable foods, medications, & pet supplies (food-wise: keep in mind that cooking requires electricity if you don’t have a gas/charcoal grill or camp-fire)
  • store bags of ice in freezer & have ice cooler out & ready in case electricity goes out
  • have battery operated flashlights, radio, clocks, fans & extra batteries on hand
  • take out cash – ATMs, banks, merchants can’t operate without power
  • if you have a generator – know how to connect & operate it safely. Test it prior to the storm
  • take a cell phone photo or make a list of the refrigerator/freezer contents to avoid opening the doors unnecessary if the power goes out
  • remove &/or secure all outdoor furniture & decor to keep it from blowing around hitting the windows

Other hurricane preparations to consider:

  • don’t forget to provide for your household pets
  • for Hampton Roads/7 cities power outage alerts from Dominion Power – text “EAST” to 898366
  • first aid kit
  • purchase water proof plastic sheeting, bungee cords, duct tape, rope
  • manual can opener
  • review storm surge maps prior to storm at http://www.vaemergency.gov

Carefree Boat Club Virginia Beach & Hampton are closing on Wednesday, Oct 5th for boating. We will remain closed until tentatively Wednesday, Oct 12th. Our re-open date for boating will be assessed and posted on ResNet & our social media outlets after the hurricane fully passes. Staff will be preparing, securing, & moving our fleet for safety prior to the impending category 4 Hurricane Matthew.
