Kate’s spent a lifetime learning these waters, and in this post, she gives readers an insider’s look at seasonal fish patterns, her favorite setups, and how even beginners can improve their catch this fall.

The fish on Lake Murray are transitioning into their fall patterns and are beginning to feed heavily in the shallow water which makes for a perfect time to cast a line on one of Carefree’s dedicated fishing boats! As the temperatures drop, the predatory fish like bass and striper move into the backs of the creeks following gizzard and threadfin shad as their main forage in the fall months. Many of the Carefree fishing boats are equipped with fish-finding electronics that can help you find the “balls” of baitfish and their predators. Watch out for diving birds and fish breaking the surface – both are signs of active schools feeding nearby.

Best Lures and Techniques      Artificial lures such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits, underspins and umbrella rigs can be highly effective for Bass and Striper foraging on shad. Live and cut bait can be used on the main river channel with planner boards, down rig, free line, or Santee drift rig around humps and creek channel bends to target Catfish and Striper as they migrate up the river.

Targeting Panfish     Panfish, such as Bream, Perch, and Crappie will be holding tight to structure such as brush and submerged timber.  Try live crickets, worms, and small jig head minnows for steady action and family friendly fun.

Book your Fall Fishing Adventure Carefree has a diverse fleet of fishing boats at each location – covering both the north and south sides of Lake Murray.   Whether you’re chasing bass, catfish or crappie, the fall season brings more comfortable temps, fewer crowds, and incredible fishing opportunities.
