The Skidaway Island Boating Club serves the boating community as a central point of interest and enthusiasm for boaters, would be, or had been boaters. This social club with a dedication to elevating boating as a significant amenity at The Landings has become party central and a boaters’ activity club primarily at Landings Harbor Marina. Over the past two years, SIBC has remarkably brought boating social club atmosphere to the foreground of boating here. Anyone who has an interest in the social life of a boating community will find a membership in the SIBC provides many opportunities to learn from, associate with and to party together with boat owners, sailors, and dreamers.
Faded from history but now reawakened and taking center stage each year is a historic sailboat race of yesteryear, now reimagined and renamed the annual ‘Hook Race’. Sailing out of Harbor Town, Hilton Head Island, driving southeastwardly out on Calabogue Sound toward the Savannah River Channel, a flotilla of likeminded captains and crews beat the winds for a stretch to Marker #2 of the south end of Wassaw Island and come about to starboard with all souls pulling for the inlet at Wassaw Sound. This planned course describes perfectly a large curving shape from which the race derives its name: a Hook!
Organized as a renewal effort in 2016, it became an immediate success and the 2017 race, took place the last Saturday in July and the lead boat crossing the committee boat line was “Masterpiece“, captained by The Landings own, Jake Masters and a crew of SIBC members. This one is in the history books!
As an amenity the Landings Marina with many of our boat club members in SIBC, Jim Guerard, also a member of Carefree Boat Club, will be there as a sponsor, on the water, photographing the boats and participating in the festivities at the conclusion of the race. Race captains and crews will be provided sustenance at the big tent on the green at Landings Harbor. There is always room for one more interested party with a boater’s soul.
