Situated between Hilton Head Island and the mainland shore of South Carolina is a gem of the barrier island estuary with an almost magnetic draw for those who want to experience the thrill of history – of rolling back time and also seeing a spark of ambition, excitement, settlement, growth and a desire to enjoy the basics of life in the slower pace of yesteryear. Daufuskie Island is reachable only by boat and that makes it a fine destination for the members of our local boat clubs.
Just a short cruise out of Landings Harbor along the ICW will get you to Freeport Harbor in less than an hour. Have lunch at the ship’s store, music on the green at the center of the square adjacent to a bar with wonderful island drinks. Sit, relax, enjoy a libation and listen to, or join in, with the music.
Take a golf cart, available for a fee, for those who want to visit the boat making woodworking shop, or the rum distillery, or tour the island to take pictures of the other landmarks and golf clubs, restaurants and rental communities. Daufuskie is a historic landmark in itself.
The magic is in the doing, the cruising and the experience. Leaving The Landings, one can be where not all can go, one can see what not all can see, and one can experience something that can only be experienced by boat. Where the land ends, life begins.
