Independence Day is right around the corner and in addition to it being America’s 240th birthday, July 4th also marks the peak of summer fun. For folks with access to a boat, July 4th is prime time to be on the water. There are so many activities in the Chicago area this time of year that are accessible by boat, you don’t have any excuse not to get out on the lake and celebrate our great country and everyone’s favorite season.
We’ve done the hard work of rounding up several great ways to enjoy your time on the Chicago waterways this month. Don’t have a boat, but want to enjoy some time out on the water this 4th of July? Consider becoming a Carefree Boat Club member. Your membership will get you unlimited access to a wide variety of boats without the hassle of maintenance and storage. Now that’s what we call freedom.
Light show on the lake
Although the city ditched their fireworks show awhile ago, the Navy Pier still keeps the lights on with a spectacular lake-front display. The best way to see the show is from the lake itself, so take your boat out in the afternoon to stake your spot, then relax and enjoy the afternoon until the light show starts. Stock your cooler and plan for a day on the water away from the crowds.
Independence Eve
Celebrate July 3rd this year at Grant Park where a patriotic music festival will be held at 6:30. Grant Park is easily accessible by boat via Monroe Harbour. Take the boat near the park’s waterfront and enjoy the music from the lake or dock it and enjoy the concert with your fellow Americans.
Castaway
North Avenue Beach is the best place in Chicago to feel like you’ve escaped the city and entered the Caribbean and Castaways is the best place on the beach to do just that. This July 4th, DJ Jem will be keeping Castaways thumping, so pull your boat up and enjoy the tropical vacation vibe right here in downtown Chicago.
Food Festival
Although technically after the Fourth, the Chicago Food Festival will help you extend the holiday from July 6-10th. Admission is free to this four-day tasting event, where you can sample cuisine from area restaurants and food trucks while watching food demonstrations with up and coming chefs. Live music and entertainment rounds out the event at Grant Park. Docking your boat and walking to the event is easy at nearby DuSable or Burnham Harbors. What’s more American than stuffing your face with delicious food?
