Program Overview
LITERACY SUPPORT
Y Readers provides literacy instruction based upon the Four-Blocks model, which includes Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing and Working With Words. Certified teachers develop and implement engaging lessons that follow this balanced literacy model. Students participate in a minimum of 2.5 hours of daily literacy instruction during the summer program and 1.5 hours each afternoon during the afterschool program.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
In addition to literacy support, students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of enrichment activities: art, music, science, field trips, physical activity, health education and character development. Participants travel to a nearby YMCA branch for weekly swim lessons during the summer program.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Y Readers places a strong emphasis on parent involvement. Parents are asked to read each night at home with their children and attend program events. During both the summer and afterschool programs, parents also attend workshops focused on supporting literacy learning at home and promoting healthy living. Y Readers Program Overview
