The beauty of living in San Diego is knowing that any day of the year is the perfect time to drop your line in the water and spend a few hours contemplating life’s mysteries while waiting for the bite, but there is something about summer that really drives it home. These long days, warm, but not too warm, stretch out before you waiting for you to fill them with soul-satisfying fishing trips on the boat of your choice, and because you chose to become a member of the Carefree Boat Club, you have more money to spend on expensive reels that your partner in life will never know exactly how much they cost! Take a random day off work at the spur of the moment, call the dock master at the marina of your choice, and take advantage of our “Spur of the Moment” boat (this does not affect your other reservations that are already on the books!) and head out under blue skies for a day of successful angling at these best fishing spots in San Diego!
San Diego Bay Fishing
The waters are clear in San Diego Bay and the opportunities to catch Spotted Bay Bass, Halibut, and Bonefish are plentiful, you just have to know the best spots to drop your anchor and your line! Embarcadero Park offers amazing fishing opportunities, especially near the pier, but this isn’t the only prime fishing spot in the bay. Set your navigation equipment in the direction of Shelter Island and see if you can expand your haul to leopard sharks and California halibut (the halibut is so sweet you will never get tired of seeing it on your plate back home.) And finally, the waters around Coronado Cays will help you feed your sushi fix as this is the perfect spot for catching yellowfin tuna on your San Diego Bay fishing trip!
Mission Bay
Mission Bay is famous for being home to the largest water park in the world, Mission Bay Aquatic Park, and is also where SeaWorld makes its home, but the bay itself is great for fishing as well! Halibut, Spotted Bay Bass, and Corvina which is a white sea bass that is popular when used to create ceviche! Drop your anchor on a cloudless day in July, pop open an ice-cold beverage waiting in the cooler you brought along for this purpose, and feel your shoulders loosen and the noises in your brain quiet as you explore the waters around some of the most pristine beaches in all of California!
La Jolla
As we said earlier, fishing is a year-round sport in this area and nowhere is that more evident than in the waters of achingly beautiful La Jolla. Somehow, the sunrises are brighter, the skies are clearer, and the fish you catch in these waters are destined to be tastier than any other place you choose to take your Carefree Boat Club vessel to! Fish the kelp forests from your boat, reeling in Calico Bass, smaller yellowtail, Lingcod, Halibut, and barracuda! It’s best not to eat any barracuda you catch, however, because although it is perfectly safe when prepared correctly, the meat of this carnivorous fish can contain harmful bacteria that will not make you happy! Take a selfie for the bragging rights, and toss it back, continuing to seek other fish that will make your meal shine! Also, keep an eye out on the direction you are heading, because La Jolla is home to not just one, but two marine protected reserves, Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve and La Jolla State Marine Reserve.
Catalina and San Clemente Islands
We have officially reached the spots that are often considered the top offshore fishing spots in all of California and possibly all of the nation! The two islands, Catalina and San Clemente are where the big fish live, including Yellowtail, Dorado, Calico Bass, and Tuna, ensuring that your fishing expedition will be successful and fun! Located about 70 miles away from the mainland, the longer daylight hours will give boaters plenty of time to relax, regroup, and catch their limit of any or all the delicious fish listed above!
Coronado Islands
Not to be confused with Coronado Island, the Coronado Islands are an island chain just over the Mexican border and are located within an hour’s boat ride from San Diego. Again, this is where the big fish roam, including GIANT yellowtails and Bluefin Tuna, and if you only catch 1, we can promise there will be enough fish meat to feed a small family!
Every Spot Offers Possibilities
The best part of boating is knowing that if the fish aren’t biting at your first stop, there are a plentitude of other spots that are just a quick boat ride away! Don’t miss out on the fishing expeditions of a lifetime, become a member of the Carefree Boat Club today!
