Lake Allatoona – Atlanta, Georgia
Lake Allatoona is located closest to Atlanta, Georgia but touches Cherokee County and small parts of Bartow County and Cobb County. It is a man made reservoir that drains water from 1,100 square miles of surrounding land. It’s home to several species of fish making it one of the best fishing destinations! It is especially known for the plentiful variety of striped bass, white bass, and spotted bass. That is why the Annual 2015 Bassmaster Classic was held this past February at a nearby lake, Lake Hartwell.
When you’re not fishing there are plenty of other activities available to try! Camping is a big recreational activity at Lake Allatoona! The Corps of Engineers manage the lake, the land and the area surrounding it, including several campgrounds and boat ramps. In fact, Allatoona Landing Marine Resort is voted one of the best campgrounds in Georgia! It offers over 116 camping sites perfect for your RV or tent, has a full service fuel dock and boat launch, and other great amenities including a general store and basketball courts.
Boating is one of the most popular activities taking place at Lake Allatoona. Currently, there are eight privately operated marinas that provide fuel, storage, boat repairs, rentals, supplies and/or other boater’s needs. The Corps of Engineers also provides fifteen public boat ramps for on the water activities such as water sports and paddle boating. Also surrounding the area are several picnic areas and shelters.

- If you’re interested in getting your boater’s license or taking some extra fishing classes there are monthly events put on by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
- Lake Allatoona supplies much of the drinking water for the three counties surrounding it.
- The total cost for creating the impoundment, including construction and land clearing was $31, 500,000 in 1950.
